What is Conductive Education?
A holistic approach to movement that focuses on what you can do, rather than what you can’t.
Conductive Education is a person-centred approach to learning movement, communication and everyday skills.
It was developed in Hungary by András Pető and has been taught in the UK since the late 1980s.
It’s based on the principle that everyone can develop and learn, whatever their starting point. Rather than treating a specific condition, it teaches the skills and strategies needed to manage its effects.
A trained conductive education specialists works with each participant to build their motor skills through everyday tasks. The aim isn’t to correct a movement in isolation. It’s to help someone use that movement in their own life, at home, at school or out in the world.
Learning, not treatment
Many people living with a neurological or movement condition are given a great deal of information about their limitations, but very little about their potential.
Conductive Education flips that around. It gives participants coping mechanisms and techniques to help them manage the difficulties their condition causes and treats that process as learning. It’s something that’s practised, built on and carried into daily life.
That’s what separates Conductive Education from physiotherapy or other treatment-based approaches. There’s no set of exercises to complete and move on from. Instead, each skill becomes part of how someone lives, long after the session ends.
“Everyone can develop and learn, regardless of their starting point.”
What a Conductive Education session looks like
Our trained conductive education specialists identify what each participant is working towards, then build a sequence of small, achievable steps that add up to the movement or skill being learned. Some of the things we can help improve include:
Everyday dexterity
Finding balance
Taking steps
Who Conductive Education helps
Conductive Education supports children and adults with motor disorders. Each programme is shaped around the individual, so two people with the same condition may work on entirely different goals. But everyone works from the same starting point of what they can already do and where they want to go next. It can help people living with:
- Cerebral palsy
- Developmental coordination disorder (DCD)
- Acquired brain injury
- Parkinson’s
- Stroke
- Multiple sclerosis
- Other movement disorders
